Firstly it must be stated that supplements are by definition a supplement to a healthy diet and lifestyle, not a replacement for it. People get fat and tired because they don’t exercise, don’t sleep, expose themselves to toxins, have too much stress and eat poorly.
No amount of fish oil is going to counteract these lifestyle habits. If you want to feel better, you need to start by getting rid of the reasons you gained weight or became fatigued in the first place, i.e. avoid toxins, clean up your diet, exercise, prioritise sleep and base your diet on clean whole food.
Once these healthier habits are in place, nows is the time to add in some foundation supplements to take your health and performance to the next level. Before we reveal what supplements we recommend, let’s establish whether we need them.
“can you get all the nutrients you need from food?” is often asked. Well, 2,000 years ago, the answer would be yes, as all food would have been organically grown in nutrient-rich soils and exposed to much less environmental toxicity. However, today is impossible for us to get the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat.
Why do we need supplementation today?
- We evolved to eat wild foods that contained dramatically higher levels of all vitamins, minerals, and essential fats.
- Because of depleted soils and industrial farming, the animals and vegetables we eat have fewer nutrients.
- Processed factory-made foods have no nutrients.
- The total burden of environmental toxins, sunlight, and chronic stress leads to higher nutrient needs.
The evidence shows we cannot get away from the need for nutritional supplements particularly if you are active and are trying to improve body composition. At the very least, everyone should consider supplementing with the following foundation supplements:
In our experience working with clients, we have found that the majority are chronically deficient in the above essential nutrients and greatly benefit from taking a multivitamin. By accepting these supplements, you optimise your ability to perform both inside and outside the gym.
We will explain in detail why we recommend each of the above supplements and what they can do for you!
