Curcumin is the yellow pigment associated with the curry spice – turmeric. Over the last 10 years, Curcumin has been one of the most researched substances within functional medicine due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are at the heart of all major chronic diseases, from cancer to heart disease.

Benefits of Curcumin

Other benefits of taking curcumin include decreasing joint pain, improving insulin sensitivity and improving neurological function.

To summarise, Curcumin has been proven to help with:

  • Chronic disease
  • Joint health
  • Brain function
  • Insulin sensitivity

From a health and fitness standpoint, we see a lot of people relying on NSAIDs – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (for example, ibuprofen) when they have joint pain. This can have negative consequences over the long term, especially for gut health.

Curcumin is a fantastic healthy alternative. Curcumin has poor bioavailability; however, it is enhanced by combining it with the active ingredient piperine found in black pepper.

Curcumin Dosage

In order to get the anti-inflammatory effects, you need approx. 1,000mg of curcuminoids a day. The natural herb Turmeric contains approximately 200 milligrams per 5 grams. Therefore, you’d need to consume 25 grams of Turmeric in total. Unless you live on curries, that’s a significant amount!

Probably the best bet is to supplement with curcumin from time to time alongside regular meals containing turmeric and black pepper.

If you are looking to lose body fat, reduce joint pain, or lessen arthritis or if you are training hard at the moment, then reducing inflammation will be an important part of the process to improve these factors. Fulled by Designs for Health Curcum-Evail
